In 1979, a music student in Tokyo sat through three consecutive Bob Marley concerts and decided what she wanted to do with her life. Okuda Hiroko had written her graduation thesis on reggae — a subject so obscure at Kunitachi College of Music that the faculty couldn't find an advisor, so they assigned a baroque specialist who said, "Well, it seems to be put together well enough," and let her pass.
