Moondog (born Louis Thomas Hardin, 1916–1999) was a blind American composer, musician, and poet who became a fixture on Sixth Avenue in Midtown Manhattan from the late 1940s to 1972, standing motionless in Viking costume for hours at a time while composing music in his head. Despite his appearance as a street eccentric, he was one of the most sophisticated composers of the 20th century — influencing Philip Glass, Steve Reich, and Charlie Parker, while predating minimalism by a decade.

Why did Moondog dress as a Viking?

Moondog adopted the helmet, spear, and fur cape as a deliberate identity. He had been blind since age 16 after a dynamite cap explosion. In New York, he was routinely mistaken for a beggar or a religious figure. The Viking costume was both armour and manifesto — it made him impossible to ignore or dismiss. He also felt a genuine spiritual connection to Norse mythology. When DJ Alan Freed stole the name 'Moondog' for his own show, Hardin successfully sued to reclaim it — one of the first musicians to win a name-theft lawsuit.

Did Philip Glass really live with Moondog?

Yes. Philip Glass and other composers including Steve Reich spent time in Moondog's orbit in the 1960s, and Glass has spoken about Moondog's profound influence on minimalism. When a German admirer offered Moondog an apartment in Hamburg in 1974, he walked to Germany and never returned to New York, spending his final 25 years composing orchestral work in Europe, where he finally received the institutional recognition America had denied him.
