Their stated reason was disgust with the music industry. The deletion has remained in force for over 30 years.

On August 23, 1994, Bill Drummond and Jimmy Cauty traveled to a boathouse on the Isle of Jura, Scotland, and burned £1,000,000 in cash — the entirety of their remaining royalties from their years as the best-selling singles act in the world. The event was filmed. Drummond and Cauty have described it in various ways over the years: as an art piece, as liberation, and as something they still don't fully understand.

What was 'The Manual' by The KLF?

'The Manual (How to Have a Number One the Easy Way)' was a 1988 book by Bill Drummond and Jimmy Cauty (then operating as the Timelords) that claimed to reveal the formula for a UK number one hit. Written after their own 'Doctorin' the Tardis' reached number one, the book was intended as a satirical dismantling of the pop industry. It has never been out of print.
